Blended Learning and Technology Integration: There is a difference.

Blended Learning is more than teaching with technology for technology’s sake. Michael Horn, of the Clayton Christensen Institute states, “The most common mistake made in implementing a blended learning model is to set forth with an appetite for the dazzling technology, rather than an interest in the relief it might bring when applied strategically to a frustrating problem. Regrettably, this leads only to cramming more devices, screens, gadgets, and software into students' and teachers' already noisy lives" (Horn & Staker, 2015). Successful implementation requires a well-designed instructional model.
When students are able to spend part of their learning time working with technology, there is an opportunity for personalized instructional time and real-time data on student performance to inform targeted instruction. Add a continuously adaptive diagnostic tool to support the blended learning model, and you have a winning combination to support core instruction.
With the right technology integration, tools, and the blended learning model, a teacher is no longer solely responsible for delivering content to an entire classroom at once, but can use a mix of online instruction, teacher led lessons, and small group instruction to ensure students receive differentiated instruction. Hear directly from a Virginia educator about how the right technology, tools, and blended learning model led to student success.
