Using Flipgrid to Give Every Student a Superpower - Their Own Voice!

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Come and learn how two teachers added Flipgrid to their instructional practice as a means for deepening student learning while providing meaningful feedback using digital tools. Flipgrid is a video discussion platform used to enhance student engagement and learning. It not only lends itself to active learning, it opens the doors to collaborative learning on a global level. Flipgrid can be used to build classroom community, digitize the reader’s response, show what students know, end of unit reflections, and much more. Flipgrid enables you to give every student a superpower - their own voice!

Super empowering students and learning is what every good teacher wants to do and the research suggests that one of the most effective tools for enhancing student empowerment, student achievement, and student learning is by incorporating meaningful feedback to students. Feedback is “useful information about the effects of an action in the light of a goal” (Wiggins, 2015). In other words, the feedback that students receive from their teachers and their peers will help them to self-monitor and self-assess whether they are accomplishing the goals and objectives of the lesson. This goes hand in hand with ISTE’s standard 1c: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Flipgrid is designed to enhance student to teacher interactions and student to student interactions in every content area. Engaging interactions lead to deeper learning and deeper thinking, thus producing super empowered students. Traditionally, many of these interactions were done within the confines of space and time. However, Flipgrid removes the barriers of space and time, thus allowing students to continue learning with each other beyond the schoolhouse walls. As students continue to receive ongoing feedback, their learning becomes more personalized and authentic and they can take ownership for their learning.

The goal of this session is to provide suggestions and examples for utilizing Flipgrid in both the classroom setting and special areas such as art, music, etc. Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to relate how they can implement Flipgrid into their lessons in order to enhance meaningful feedback and student engagement. They will leave this session with ideas that can be instantly implemented into their daily lessons.
