Teacher Makerspaces: Using Problem-Based Learning for Learning Technologies-Integration Professional Development

Technology adoption and integration prove great challenges for school districts. And even more, it is difficult to provide quality professional development that actually helps teachers develop the skills in meaningful and effective ways. This session focuses on using a problem-based learning approach to teach pre-service teachers the use of technology to solve educational problems and effectively integrate. We argue that this method can be used for professional development beyond the pre-service teacher training model.

The session will look at projects developed as part of a problem-based model in the areas of virtual reality, 3-D printing, microcomputer programming and mobile tools. The student-submitted products will provide a launching point for a discussion of re-envisioning professional development for current teachers in addition to pre-service teachers.
