Meet Alexa, Your New Classroom (Voice) Aide

Voice assistant devices are all the rage right now, allowing us to conveniently order products, ask questions, set reminders, and control our environment just by speaking certain key words and phrases from the comfort of our living room couch. Much like many other consumer electronic devices that were originally designed to be used in the home or businesses, voice assistants are breaking out of these environments and finding a place in the classrooms of innovative teachers who use them to empower both their students and themselves. This session will illustrate early best-practice ideas for utilizing voice assistants like Amazon's Alexa, Google's Voice Assistant, Apple's Siri, and Microsoft's Cortana to make learning fun, dynamic, and accessible for diverse learners in elementary classrooms (although secondary teachers and staff may find it useful as well). We will also explore several add on voice assistant "skills" that teachers might find useful, including options for supporting student research, reading, and recreation!
