Join an elementary and middle school ITRT from Goochland County, as they empower teachers and students with an opportunity to integrate coding into the Virginia standards. We will discuss how we implemented a set of Ozobots across the school, lessons ideas, and the collaboration that exists to make this venture successful. You will learn how the implementation of the Ozobots led to deeper learning and high student engagement/motivation. Come join us as we discuss how one idea sparked a school wide movement towards innovation!! Lesson ideas include: Retelling stories, manipulating numbers, historical timelines, life cycles, explorer travel paths, amusement park rides, and more! Come check out what these tiny programmable robots can do! You will empower your students and open up their minds to a whole new world of thinking and learning!!

We live in a world with a lot of problems, but we also live in a time with powerful technology tools to help us create solutions. As technology educators, we possess a superpower, the ability to inspire the next generation in technology. And in the words of Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben, with “great power comes great responsibility”. How do we super empower students and teachers to tackle these real-world problems and wield their technology powers for good? I’ll share some things I’ve learned as a superhero-in-training working with students at St. Anne’s-Belfield school, Tech-Girls and beyond.
Schools have traditionally been designed to work well for adults, but the conventional school design hasn't always served our learners. Students today need to be empowered to take ownership of their learning in relevant and meaningful ways to prepare them for a constantly evolving world. This session will explore how to cultivate shared ownership, respect, and trust, creating a school learning culture that students value and to which they want to belong in the digital age. Attendees will be exposed to a variety of successful strategies and initiatives implemented at schools with a focus on the purposeful integration of technology, a redefinition of learning spaces, personalized learning, and the whole child.
EdCampVSTE, it’s our hero,
Gonna take boring PD down to zero,
It’s our powers magnified,
And it’s teaching on the education side
EdCamp is a form of "unconference" designed specifically for educators and their needs. Unlike traditional conferences (like VSTE) and PD, at EdCampVSTE we will choose, organize and schedule our sessions created by together at the start of the event. Come to EdCampVSTE to create your own schedule to decide what you want to discuss and learn. Instead of one person standing in front of the room talking for a designated session, people are encouraged to have discussions and hands on sessions. EdCamp strives to bring teachers together to talk and learn about the things that matter most to them: their interests, passions, and questions.

The Elementary Robotics and Coding pop-up session is for anyone thinking about including robotics and coding in their elementary classroom or school. We will explore three types of robots and offer sandbox time and soundly integrated lessons. The featured robots are very affordable and intuitive for beginning teachers and students, but appeal to all levels of skill.
