Empowering learners with Interactive Video Assessment Tools
How can instructors measure the effectiveness of video interventions? Have you ever assigned your students an online video from Khan Academy, YouTube, or TEDx and then wondered how you could track which students watched the entire video, who clicked play and then became occupied by something else as the video played on, and, of those who actually watched, who was able to grasp the concepts taught in the video? This session will give an overview and comparison of two interactive video assessment tools (EDpuzzle and PlayPosit) that help educators use digital video more effectively as a learning tool as part of an online, blended, or flipped classroom.

From Lil' Minecrafters to Minecraft Makershop: Empowering Kids to Make and Create With Architecture and Design
Minecraft has found its way into millions of young hands around the globe. While many choose to play and survive, others choose to build and create. You can easily find designs of the Eiffel Tower, the Globe Theatre, or even the Great Wall of China online. Minecraft lends itself easily to architecture and design theory where kids can learn how colors, shapes, depth, and textures come together to create amazing things. You'll learn how students as young as kindergarten all the way through middle school can use Minecraft to learn about these skills. Discover samples of these final projects, and see how students can change and grow throughout the unit. Many students go from uncertainty and no skills to thoughtful designs and leaders in design and architecture skills. You'll even leave with templates and lessons to empower students in K-2, 3rd-5th, and 6th-9th grades!

Open Education Resources: Igniting Change in Teaching and Learning
Open Educational Resources (OER) are free and openly licensed educational materials that can be used for teaching, learning, research, and other purposes. Educators can use, modify, and redistribute as necessary without copyright or cost restrictions. U.S. Dept. of Ed is running a #GoOpen campaign encouraging all educators in all districts and states to use openly licensed material in hopes of igniting change within the schools. The driving forces behind OER Commons is to prepare today’s educator with the highest quality resources by encouraging participation and co-creation. Here you can create an account to allow you to create OERs, discover OERs created by other educators, or connect with groups globally.

Digital resources found in OERs can be modified and used to create learning experiences tailored to individual student needs. OER lessons will be design by educators who have collaborated with other educators who are invested in having an open dialogue about the learning experiences of students globally.

Educators in today’s school must design lessons that meet needs of the interactive, digital-media saturated world that our students are growing up in. Today’s students will only know one way to research, watch videos, and consume information. Using OERs will allow educators access to high-quality, relevant materials, strengthen confidence in educators and students by allowing for ownership over teaching and learning, while remaining free to the educator.

Participants will learn about OERs and how to access them. Participants will feel empowered to utilize the resources available and change the way learning happens in their classrooms by SuperEmpowering kids and learning.

Proof Positive! A Guide to Digital Tools that Empower Kids and Support Meaningful Collaboration
What would an ideal classroom environment look like for you? Would all students be actively sharing their thoughts and ideas during collaboration? Would dynamic and high-level academic conversations be a buzz? Would all students feel comfortable expressing their opinions?
In a perfect world, the answer would be yes to all of these questions, but as educators, we know it can be difficult to engage all students, all of the time, especially during collaboration.
However, through the use of several digital tools including Verso, Google Drawings, and Quizlet Live, meaningful collaboration and total participation from your students is possible.
Come discover tools that will propel your 21st century learners into a new level of collaboration and exploration.

Social Media Superhero; Using your powers to connect student learning to the local and global communities.
I began my teaching career in 2001. Back then, overhead projectors vastly outnumbered SMART boards, cell phones were simplistic, and the only social media available was myspace. In short, connecting and collaborating did not happen digitally. Teachers and students in 2017 are different then they were then. They are more connected to the digital landscape than ever before. It is rare to encounter a teacher, much less a student, that does not have a smartphone. Students, and teachers as well, utilize social media to legitimize every facet of their lives, except for their content learning. How do you use this attachment to social media to build connections with students, faculty, and the community both within the local school and the global community?
Twitter can be used as a platform to quickly share information, highlight successes, and provide and receive feedback from the global community. In this digital landscape it becomes increasingly important for us to become more professional in our use of information, especially as we look at the profile of a graduate and what a future ready graduate looks like in 2017 and beyond. I will explore the use of twitter as a platform to build both teacher and learner agency and to build connections with students, parents as well as both the local and global communities.

Allowing students to teach the world provides opportunities that truly engages students in their own learning. Effectively incorporating educational technology into classrooms can empower students with the ability to reach others outside of their own community. Attendees to this session will learn multiple ways for students to connect with others around the world through mystery hangouts (which are not limited to only state locations!), publish their own thoughts and ideas in creative ways that are not just limited to blogs, and curate content to help others learn via websites such as Google MyMaps. Participants will leave this session feeling prepared and confident to provide new and exciting learning opportunities for students.

Engaging and Involving Students in Large Scale Collaborative Projects
An effective method for fighting student disengagement in school is the incorporation of project-based learning (PBL) into the curricula (Krajcik & Blumenfeld, 2006). A PBL instructional approach begins with a problem that needs to be solved, and encourages students to pursue solutions to the problem in authentic and real situations. One way to make PBL more impactful is to collaborate with the greater community (Krajcik, Czerniak, & Berger, 2002). One possible venue for this type of community collaboration and solvable real world problems can be found in school improvement initiatives within the building. Instructional leaders can collaborate and work alongside students to improve the instructional culture in their school while also providing opportunities for those students to engage in PBL, think critically, and be fully engaged in the learning process. Many of these possible initiatives center on the incorporation of instructional technology into daily instruction within the school, and in this area the input of students, as both digital natives and the recipients of daily instruction, can be invaluable. This session labels these type of large-scale projects as “Student Led Instructional Initiatives”.

Included in this session will be an overview of how teachers can successfully include students in designing, implementing, and reflecting upon large scale instructional initiatives in a school, especially ones that enhance how instructional technology is used in building-level instruction. Specific examples will be shared from Glen Allen High School, where over the past three years students have (1) produced and disseminated a digital citizenship training video to the student body and school stakeholders, (2) created the school’s first Augmented Reality Sandbox, and (3) converted a small auxiliary classroom into a whole-school high-tech makerspace and dynamic learning environment for teachers and students in collaboration with Virginia Commonwealth University. All three of these projects have been student-led and teacher facilitated. In each case, students were allowed to succeed or fail in their efforts and make important decisions that impacted and ultimately enhanced the entire school’s learning environment and instructional culture. In each case, part of the overall project goals were to increase the student body’s access to instructional tools and technology.

Using these examples and existent theory on student centered learning, project based learning, and reciprocal teaching, participants will leave with a concrete framework for how to encourage and support the inclusion of students in larger, multi-step, instructional initiatives. They will also be presented with several ideas for school-wide projects that can be pursued by students. While each of the three provided examples took place in a high school, K-12 suggestions and examples will be highlighted so that instructional leaders at any level can initiate student-led instructional initiatives.

Incorporating Digital Learning in a Reading/English Classroom
Do you have trouble building reading fluency, comprehension, and increasing reading rates? Struggle to motivate reluctant readers? Choosing high-interest texts? Providing structure for silent reading time? Helping students acquire new vocabulary? Do you want to bring technology into your reading or language arts class more regularly? Do you want to see measurable gains from your students? In my Reading and English classes, students become motivated learners by using an innovative curriculum of digital and nondigital resources built around the use of modern literature and invaluable online resources. With the use of the Reading Plus program in my Reading classes, students have increased their reading levels anywhere between one level and five levels! This program, along with the use of iMovie, Schoology, Kindles, and various apps on Chromebooks and iPads, helps to easily differentiate instruction while simultaneously building confidence in reluctant readers by seamlessly integrating technology with fictional and nonfiction texts. Technology is a tool used to bridge reading gaps and create new types of teacher-student interactions, not to replace good instruction with computers. Once struggling readers learn and develop the strategies needed to navigate through literature, they become empowered and open to many new adventures. Exposing these students to current texts through a variety of technology allows them to have more familiarity with the text, the class, and the appropriate use of various devices and programs. Most importantly, the access to, and consistent use of, digital resources allows students to build their skills and confidence to be successful in the class, in school, and in their futures. Reading and English class are the modes used to empower students to enhance the strengths they already possess. Let me show you how I guide my students back to the path of reading engagement!

No more sticky notes! Using Read2Grasp during Reader's Workshop with 1:1 devices!
Read2Grasp is a new app that replaces the traditional reading strategy of text coding using sticky notes with the iPad! Teachers monitor student thinking through the web and provide feedback. Learn all the different components of Read2Grasp: student text coding using reading strategy, teacher feedback (praise and goal), student rating of submitted books, student writing opinions of books, class suggestion page monitored by teacher, and student access to peer review of books to choose their next book.
This session will show how to integrate the app into the language arts block. Use as part of a mini-lesson, during guided reading, or as tool for individual conferencing. Students use the app during independent reading time or Reader's Workshop and empower their own learning by using teacher feedback to reflect on their thinking and improving their reading skills.  Participants should bring a charged device to this session if possible.

Un-Coding
Coding is a great skill to learn, but we must keep in mind that coding languages and syntax change over time. If we think of coding as a vehicle for learning logic, design, and iterative thinking, we can be much more flexible in how we reach learners who might not think coding is for them. This applies to all learners, both adults and children. Using tools already at our disposal, we can tap into learners’ talents and personal interests to achieve the same goals. Creating animations in presentation software, compositions in music editing software, and ediging videos can lead to learning the same thinking structures and skills required by coders.

Blended Learning and Technology Integration: There is a difference.
Blended Learning is more than teaching with technology for technology’s sake. Michael Horn, of the Clayton Christensen Institute states, “The most common mistake made in implementing a blended learning model is to set forth with an appetite for the dazzling technology, rather than an interest in the relief it might bring when applied strategically to a frustrating problem. Regrettably, this leads only to cramming more devices, screens, gadgets, and software into students' and teachers' already noisy lives" (Horn & Staker, 2015). Successful implementation requires a well-designed instructional model.
When students are able to spend part of their learning time working with technology, there is an opportunity for personalized instructional time and real-time data on student performance to inform targeted instruction. Add a continuously adaptive diagnostic tool to support the blended learning model, and you have a winning combination to support core instruction.
With the right technology integration, tools, and the blended learning model, a teacher is no longer solely responsible for delivering content to an entire classroom at once, but can use a mix of online instruction, teacher led lessons, and small group instruction to ensure students receive differentiated instruction. Hear directly from a Virginia educator about how the right technology, tools, and blended learning model led to student success.

Geospatial literacy is an important for creating globally competent citizens. Information that is oriented to time and space provides opportunities to explore the complexity and interconnectedness of economic, political, social, or ecological relationships. Geospatial technologies allow students to utilize critical thinking skills to locate, display and analyze geographic information, and make sense of the increasing amount of place-based data that is emerging. Engaging our students in developing geospatial literacy helps them to understand how location affects perspectives, power, and the environment.

How Google Works: Are Search Engines Really Dumb and Should Educators Care
Google is the first place that students visit when conducting research. Students don’t conduct research, they google a topic. However, most do not know how Google works to determine the results for a search query. This session, citing the most current 2016-2017 sources from Google, will explain how Google works to determines the results returned for a search query. The goal of the presentation is to provide educators with the knowledge to influence students to integrate Google, along with the library databases, into their research process.
The presentation will focus on the on-page and the off-page factors that searchers can exploit to construct better search queries. Attendees will learn about the importance of the locations of words on a webpage; for example, words in the title of the webpage and terms in the webpage address. Attendees will learn about the importance of links as the most important factor that Google considers when ranking results.
This knowledge will dispel the myth that Google ranks webpages based on the popularity of the webpage. Other myths dismissed are that Google understands the words used in a search query, that Google accepts payment for placing webpages at the top of the results, and that Google always returns the best results. Two search queries, one on Martin Luther King and another on Zionist history will prove that Google does not return the best webpages for a query. To prove that assertion, an examination of the links to the webpages returned for the queries will demonstrate that links to a webpage to determine the ranking of results, even when the webpage is racist or anti-Semitic. Attendees will learn that not all links are equal; for instance, links from .edu and .gov sites and some .org sites, like Wikipedia.org, are more important factors to Google when measuring the quality of links.
After attending this session, educators will understand how Google ranks results and, more importantly, they will have the knowledge to teach and guide their students to use Google and the library databases.

Let's Hear It: Developing Podcasts for Professional Development
If you have listened to a podcast and value educators as colleagues and mentors, then you might consider how podcasts can become a worthwhile tool for anytime, anywhere learning and professional development. Podcasts provide relatable stories that can inspire school professionals to hone their craft, and continue the hard and rewarding work of education. In this session you will learn about the tools and platforms of podcasts, and how to prepare and organize your first few interviews. If you aren’t trained as a journalist or theatrical performer, all the better. What you do need is the ability to understand and appreciate the art and craft of instruction.

Here is the story of our podcast, The Answer Key. In Fairfax County Public Schools there is a belief that learning and leadership may evolve but what remains constant are school professionals who believe in student success. As writer, Stephen Covey, and educator, Bud Spillane, often said, “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.” The Answer Key is an opportunity to meet educators who love what they do, who affect positive change, and keep the “main thing” kids. The National Center for Education Statistics states that in the fall of 2016 “about 50.4 million students will attend public and secondary schools.” The Answer Key is a sneak peek beyond a classroom setting and an opportunity to understand how teachers teach and how students learn in a large public school setting. This session is an opportunity to learn how you can create a platform for professional development with simple digital tools, to harness the talent of school professionals, and to build a community of learners that empowers instructional practice.

Welcome to The Science Cafe! Enhancing Presentation Literacy Using infographics
The Science Café concept emphasizes the importance of celebrating and sharing scientific research with the general public. Students become research scientists as they develop an original research question and present their findings at the Science Cafe using infographic posters. As a result, the learning experience builds and enhances the development of students’ literacy skills in the areas of research and communication. Angela Boubouheropoulos (GRT), Cindy Kube (CT), and Lee Cooper (ITS) [Salem High School, VBCPS] developed a performance task, rubric, and corresponding ancillary materials in order to have Biology students take on the role of research scientists in presenting their research on the connection between biochemistry and cells using infographics.

E-Rate Update for 2018
In 2018 the E-Rate Program will continue to evolve under the Modernization Order for the E-rate Program for Schools and Libraries. The Modernization Report outlined major changes in the E-rate program that are impacting your schools fiscal and technology planning for the future. In wake of these changes in the E-rate program you need to continue to adjust and act in a way to minimize the loss of funding in some categories as well as looking at ways to maximize funding in others.
On December 11, 2014 the FCC approve the Second E-Rate Modernization Order that focused on additional flexibility for Schools and Libraries to find options for purchasing broadband services to meet the demand for their Internet capacity needs. On September 11, 2015 the Eligible Services List for 2016 was released that further clarified changes in Category 1 & 2 funding for the new round of E-Rate funding and there will be further changes in the Eligible Services List for 2018.
This session will review the latest changes to the Modernization Order for 2018-19, changes in the Eligible Services list, the effect of raising the spending cap to over $4 Billion per year on your planning, look at ways to plan and optimize E-rate funding for your schools, examine the results of Broadband Projects and look at ways E-Rate can help your schools in the future.

This session will illustrate early best-practice ideas for utilizing voice assistants like Amazon's Alexa, Google's Voice Assistant, Apple's Siri, and Microsoft's Cortana to make learning fun, dynamic, and accessible for diverse learners in elementary classrooms (although secondary teachers and staff may find it useful as well). Virtual Reality (Google Cardboard, Gear VR, and Oculus Rift) in the Classroom!
Google Cardboard is the dominant virtual reality tool in the classroom. The viewers are inexpensive and students can get a 3D experience with head tracking. But more students have Samsung phones that can run Gear VR, and the price of Oculus Rift has dropped recently. I will be running a HANDS ON session where participants can try Gear VR and the Oculus rift in this session. We will discuss basic topics such as are there educationally appropriate programs for Gear VR and rift? What computers are needed to run rift? What are the advantages to using different VR programs? One of the biggest surprises is how easy it is for students to create programs for rift using Unity3D. Creating software for Virtual Reality is an excellent way to SuperEmpower students for learning.

Mentoring the Super(Student)Hero: SuperEmpowering Student Learning
As teachers we often adopt the role of mentor-- providing the young hero with the wisdom, tools, and most of all, confidence to do something monumental on their own. We may have helped them by giving them the tools, but they will be the ones who have to use them. Our gratification comes when we see them take ownership of their learning and apply it in ways even we didn't know they could. This presentation will highlight ways teachers can employ tools such as Google Docs, Draftback, Google Keep, and Google Classroom to enhance the Super-Student's tool belt and create independent, self-regulated learners. We will focus on how these tools can be used in a project-based environment to support performance tasks and assessments and reflect the "5 Cs" of the well-rounded learner: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and citizenship.

Coding Counts in Elementary!
Coding is one of the biggest "buzz-words" in education today, but how do we make it a meaningful practice and connect it to Virginia’s curriculum? Coding Counts teaches elementary educators how to use numerous methods of coding to connect curriculum with 21st Century Skills! Nothing engages students more than giving them a multitude of technology to express their learning. In this session participants will explore how to link SOL standards in grades K-5, and critical thinking skills by using different coding tools. Discover the ways that robotic technologies such as Sphero robots, Ozobots, Code N' Go Mouse, Osmo Coding, and drones can be useful tools in the classroom. However, since not all schools and classrooms have access to these types of technology, participants will also learn how to engage students in coding projects using simple iPad apps, Chromebooks, and laptops! Throughout the session each grade level will be broken down by the standards that are taught and the coding strategies that go along with them.
Starting in the primary grades, participants will see how to bring coding down to a basic level so that even our little learners will feel accomplished! Beginning with the connection that coding is a basic language of the 21st Century, participants will learn how coding can affect their classrooms. Explore how standards such as ordinal numbers, place value, following basic commands, map skills, retelling, sequencing, patterns, shapes, lifecycles, weather patterns, and more fit into a coding curriculum! During the session participants will use multiple ways of coding to teach K-2 SOLs, infusing lessons with both technology and the passion for learning!
For participants who focus on the upper elementary students, come see how grades 3-5 SOLs such as plant parts, longitude and latitude, geography, retelling, word problems, layers of the Earth, simple machines, force and motion, angles, and much more are explored and conquered by allowing students to “show what they know” in code. Even the most tedious standards can be brought to life with a robotic buddy, or an excellent app!
Participants will empower their super students by building their knowledge base of different coding languages and technology tools to express their learning. Participants will see how students are able to “choose their own technology” while teachers take a summative or formative assessment grade. By engaging students in code, even the most reluctant learners will find their “super powers” and be excited and willing to share their understanding of the VA SOLs.
In this BYOT session participants will learn how to use your own technology to super charge your teaching and create an engaging experience for all learners! With clear-cut lessons and ideas, participants will leave with a vast knowledge of coding and a toolbox to begin coding in their own classrooms and schools! Come check out why Coding Counts!

This session will demonstrate how to incorporate technology when creating an educational escape room. Participants will learn the basic materials and setup needed for an escape room. Additionally, participants will be introduced to a variety of apps, websites, and hands on technology that can be incorporated in the experience. In addition, session attendees will learn best practices and pitfalls to avoid when they are designing their own escape room activity for their students. Finally, the participants of the session will take part in a culminating escape room activity that will incorporate the different equipment, applications, and technology discussed during the session. The activity will demonstrate what new knowledge attendees will be able to bring back to their building after attending the session.

Team Up for Green Screen
Joey might be timid and shy on the playground, but using green screen, he is empowered to trudge through a rainforest or rescue a city from certain destruction. He can give a weather report from Alaska, step into Starry Night, become a character in Magic Tree House, or see himself atop the Great Wall of China.

Green screen videos are are a super-fun way to allow students to express themselves creatively, reach higher and deeper levels of thinking, and publish content with a purpose. While starting with green screen might sound intimidating, we are going to show you how using a team approach makes the process achievable. Using demonstration and audience participation, we will walk teachers and ITRTs through all the steps in planning, executing, and publishing a green screen video that students will beg to watch again and again. We will utilize the Do Ink green screen app, an iPad, green screen background, and a mic. This presentation is intended for a K-8 audience, with potential applications at higher grades.

Zumba
During the VSTE conference, some participants may want to get a workout session in during the three days that they are in Roanoke. I propose having a Zumba session as a way to have fun and exercise, I think that it would be a great way to get to know other participants from the state who have a love for dancing and fitness. Even though the session will not target technology integration, it will allow participants during the VSTE conference to relax and have fun. Please complete the attached Zumba waiver that I have attached to the session. I'll have copies of the waiver as well the morning of the session if you forgot your waiver or were unable to print beforehand. Be sure to dress comfortably in your work out clothes and sneakers for this session! Don't forget to bring a towel, water and maybe an extra shirt for afterwards... we will be sweating! :)

Photography for SuperEmpowering Student Learning
The best graphics for helping students enhance their learning come from the camera you and most of them carry everywhere: a smartphone. We’ll start with some basic techniques for making great photographs and discuss a variety of ideas for using photography everyday in your classroom. After we take a short photowalk around the hotel to practice, we'll look at easy ways to edit, manage, and share your images using Google Photos and other tools. Finally, if time allows, we’ll play with easy ways to create 360° VR images that can be used in Google Cardboard (think DIY Google Street View) on that same smartphone. Be sure to bring your Apple or Android phone so you can play along.

Are you the ACTIVATOR? Involved in the learning process of each student? Why Not?
Lightspeed’s instructional Audio and Video Solutions reveal hidden insights to learning that are otherwise missed by students and teachers. It’s time to build listening into the learning environment.
We have identified three aspects of the learning process where the ability to listen and ultimately learn, are at risk due to changes in instruction and the learning environment. In each of these, Lightspeed reveals critical insights needed for learning that are otherwise hidden from teachers and students.
Engage the whole class.
Improve speech intelligibility and provide an even distribution of sound so that students hear, understand, and gain insights even in a less than perfect acoustic environment. Our vision is to have every child hear every word.
Activate group learning
Teachers must be able to listen as well. This is particularly difficult in today’s active, flexible classroom. Activating learning can only come from receiving important feedback from students on how they are progressing. Lightspeed gives teachers tools to listen in on student groups providing them with insights they need to assess student needs in real-time.
Collaborate and grow. Teachers need the ability to listen to their own teaching for self-reflection and listen to the teaching of others to learn new techniques and methods. Insights shared among teachers through coaching, exemplars and professional learning communicates elevate everyone’s skills.

Come to this session to experience how the Activate System can reveal hidden insights in small group learning.

Cybersecurity Insights for You & Your Students
GenCyber @ Lord Fairfax Community College

For the past few years the NSF (National Science Foundation), and the NSA (National Security Agency), respectively, have provided funding for various summer enrichment programs, specifically aimed at introducing middle school students, high school students, and even K-12 teachers, to the world of Cybersecurity through knowledge, skills, applications, teaching, learning and training opportunities, all across the nation. The GenCyber program has been one of those continuing efforts, specifically designed to positively influence and affect the current and future needs of our nation’s lack of cybersecurity professionals, as we grapple with the looming critical shortage of women and men, young and old, from every race, background and ethnicity, needed to answer this call. We too are needed to answer the call and respond to the challenges that our nation, and the world-at-large now faces, to further the growth and development of future ethically-grounded cyber warriors, able to respond to the security issues that are prevalent in every facet of our lives.

This session will share a few highlights from one of those initiatives, while introducing audience participants to cybersecurity tools, activities, and GenCyber initiatives and activities within and around the Commonwealth of Virginia, so that they may in turn take these tools, skills, techniques, and shared knowledge back into their classrooms, and into their homes to share with their families.

We will also share plans that may offer participants the chance to join in LFCC's efforts to bring additional learning opportunities to the underserved student populations in the Northern Shenandoah Valley region, and perhaps to the Commonwealth as a whole. Session participants may also seek to pursue collaborations, or take advantage of opportunities with institutions and initiatives near or within their specific geographical regions. We ask participants that they bring their laptops, tablets, and smart phones to the session, with which they may be able to participate in a few hands-on activities, and then ultimately take what they glean back home.

Darrell W. Andrews, MEd & MS, is an Associate Professor for Information Technology at Lord Fairfax Community College – Middletown Campus, who served as a K12 teacher and administrator prior to joining LFCC. Learning Experiences to Engage and Empower Students
Are you looking for ways to be inspired to engage your learners? Do you need ideas on how to empower your students? Longwood University's Institute for Teaching through Technology and Innovative Practices (ITTIP) will share how they are facilitating classroom learning experiences in seven divisions to foster student engagement through 1) technology integration with littleBits; 2) problem-based learning; and 3) global collaboration. Key components also include alternative assessments and the 5c components of the Profile of Virginia Graduate (critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship).

ITTIP will share the teaching and learning experiences being used in a year-long professional development with teachers from various subject areas in grades 3-8. Teachers are involved in learning how technologies like littleBits and Google Expedition can be used in the classroom to engage their students in content learning through problem-solving and inquiry-based pedagogies. The professional development experience includes exploration with tools such as Seesaw, Google Classroom, and Skype to see how these tools could be used in the classroom to facilitate engagement through collaborate work, communication, and critical and creative thinking.

In addition to being challenged with designing inquiry-based learning experiences for students through problem-based learning (PBL), alternative assessments, and technologies during a five-day summer workshop, participating teachers are continuing their learning and leadership in facilitating an engaged and empowered classroom through a year-long professional learning community. During these experiences teachers will be involved in a fall book study to learn more about ways they can facilitate classroom connections through global learning experiences.

Come hear about our teacher’s experiences and get inspired with ways to empower and engage your students!

ITTIP will share how this professional learning experience is supporting strands of the International Society for Technology in Education’s (ISTE) newly released “ISTE Standards for Educators”.

Moving Full STEAM Ahead
Makerspaces, STEAM labs and fab labs are popping up in schools across the state. As educators we know how important it is to provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering and tinkering. However, Finding the funds for resources as well as the time to allow this exploration in an environment which demands we stick to a pacing guide can be daunting. It can be done! In one month's time a challenge to raise $5000 to start a STEAM lab was successfully undertaken. Come find out how a small rural school division obtained funds and what they do in their STEAM Lab which the entire school fondly calls "The Collaboratory."

Reaping the Benefits of the ISTE Standards for Educators
James Madison University ISTE Standards for Educators Certification, an ISTE Mastery Level Seal of Alignment Program, engages teachers in a deeply reflective, intensive process to align their instructional technology practices to the teacher standards set forth by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). This opportunity is for self-directed learners who are confident in their use of technology. Participants in the program develop their skills to become technology leaders at the school and district levels.
This session provides an opportunity to explain the overall scope of the program and its benefits to teachers and administrators. Interested parties will leave with the following information:
• Participant options.
• Program length.
• The program formats.
• Cost, CEU’s, and graduate credit.
• Educational technology use requirements.

The JMU ISTE Standards for Educators Certification program has been in existence since 2002. In 2008 the change to the new Teacher Standards took place, and we are currently changing to the new Standards for Educators. Prior to 2012, the program was a Virginia school district face-to-face experience. In 2012, the program utilized a distance learning approach and extended its opportunity nationally and internationally.
I have been an evaluator since 2008; working at the local level, and in 2012 I became Program Coordinator, working with both international and national groups.

What to share Outline

The following information/documents will be made available:
• Examples of the Standards and their respective rubrics.
• Examples of documents used in the evaluating process: Elaborated Rubrics, Checklists, and rubric Reflections.
• Examples of exemplary teacher submissions featuring lesson plans and project based learning activities.
Supporting Research
• The ISTE Standards for Teachers

Teaching Students to Identify, Challenge and Combat Fake News
We assume that because students are fluent in social media they are equally perceptive and critical about what they find on the Internet. Stanford researchers, in their benchmark study, EVALUATING INFORMATION: THE CORNERSTONE OF CIVIC ONLINE REASONING, show the opposite to be true. “Our “digital natives” may be able to move between Facebook and Twitter while simultaneously uploading a selfe to Instagram and texting a friend. But when it comes to evaluating information that flows through social media channels, they are easily duped.” The Stanford researchers concluded that middle school, high school, and college students “show a dismaying inability to reason about information they see on the Internet. Students, for example, had a hard time distinguishing advertisements from news articles or identifying the source of the information.”
This presentation will define “fake news” and “facts” and provide attendees with sources such as, research studies, lesson plans, videos, and checklists appropriate for middle school and for high school students. The sources are from teacher-education programs from colleges and universities like Stanford, PBS stations like KQED in Boston, and organizations like the Anti-Defamation League and the American Psychological Assn. One relevant lesson plan is the PBS News Hour Extra lesson plan, “The role of media literacy in teaching your students about Charlottesville.”
Attendees will learn how to perform reverse image searches to determine the authenticity of an online image. They will learn how to identify misleading websites by analyzing the webage address; for example, is, www.abcnews.com.co the official ABC News website?
Since Google is the most popular and trusted search engine with students, attendees will see two searches that prove – beyond any doubt – that Google does not return the best results.
Attendees will also receive access to a Fake News Portaportal listing online sources that will aid teachers in preparing classes that help kids learn to ask the right questions and gain the skills necessary to evaluate sources and combat fake news.

Lessons At Their Fingertips!!!
Using Nearpod in the Special Education Class
You ask your class a question and nine hands go up! Instead of just calling on one student, let them all answer at once. Nearpod allows all students to interact at the same time. What month is this? All students mark it using Nearpod and send it to the front of the room.
Most schools have some type of interactive whiteboards but there are some students that need to have that interactive experience right at their desk. The time it takes one student to go to the interactive board and solve a math problem or mark a calendar, multiple students can send up their answers. Nearpod has turned our Special Education Classrooms into a super empowering classroom. From morning meeting to reading and math our students are engaged and in control of their learning. We will show you how we use this technology with our high needs Autism classes to our general Special Education classes. Nearpod is an interactive presentation and assessment tool that can be used to create, polls, quiz’s, images, drawing-boards, videos and more.

Using Flipgrid to Give Every Student a Superpower - Their Own Voice!
Come and learn how two teachers added Flipgrid to their instructional practice as a means for deepening student learning while providing meaningful feedback using digital tools. Flipgrid is a video discussion platform used to enhance student engagement and learning. It not only lends itself to active learning, it opens the doors to collaborative learning on a global level. Flipgrid can be used to build classroom community, digitize the reader’s response, show what students know, end of unit reflections, and much more. Flipgrid enables you to give every student a superpower - their own voice!

Super empowering students and learning is what every good teacher wants to do and the research suggests that one of the most effective tools for enhancing student empowerment, student achievement, and student learning is by incorporating meaningful feedback to students. Feedback is “useful information about the effects of an action in the light of a goal” (Wiggins, 2015). In other words, the feedback that students receive from their teachers and their peers will help them to self-monitor and self-assess whether they are accomplishing the goals and objectives of the lesson. This goes hand in hand with ISTE’s standard 1c: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Flipgrid is designed to enhance student to teacher interactions and student to student interactions in every content area. Engaging interactions lead to deeper learning and deeper thinking, thus producing super empowered students. Traditionally, many of these interactions were done within the confines of space and time. However, Flipgrid removes the barriers of space and time, thus allowing students to continue learning with each other beyond the schoolhouse walls. As students continue to receive ongoing feedback, their learning becomes more personalized and authentic and they can take ownership for their learning.

The goal of this session is to provide suggestions and examples for utilizing Flipgrid in both the classroom setting and special areas such as art, music, etc. Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to relate how they can implement Flipgrid into their lessons in order to enhance meaningful feedback and student engagement. They will leave this session with ideas that can be instantly implemented into their daily lessons.

Anim8Nature: Animation to Explore Art and Science
Animation is a magnet for kids, especially when they learn how to be animators. iPads are amazing kid-friendly and completely portable production studios that students can use to learn to animate. They become content creators not just content consumers. iPads and selected apps help students develop creativity and critical thinking skills and learn new tools for communication.

A growing number of educators, artists and scientists are investigating science with art. STEAM provides exciting avenues for pursuing innovation and exploring the process shared by artists and scientists. This seems most urgent now because children today are spending 50% less time outdoors than they were 20 years ago. There is substantial evidence that time in nature and unstructured play are essential for healthy children and a healthy environment. Creating animations on iPads, resources on-line and getting outside can all play a role in sparking curiosity and getting kids engaged in new ways with the natural world.

I am an artist, media producer and an educator. For the past 4 years I have worked with students and teachers with iPads in schools, museums and art spaces. The workshops have been as short as one hour or as long as 3 hours a day for one week (iPad Camp). I have found a suite of apps that are easily accessible to the students (6 to 11) and exciting to use. I look forward to sharing with fellow educators what I have learned and how I am incorporating that information into Anim8Nature, an educational resource I am developing.

Anim8Nature is a web-based resource built around animated science shorts. Each animation is one minute long with no narration to be “read” as wordless stories. The subjects of the shorts are the life cycles of a variety of organisms. I want kids to ask questions and learn more about the patterns and relationships they see in life cycles and nature in general. My mission is to spark curiosity, provide prompts for exploring science with art and get kids outside inspired to be environmental stewards.

I am particularly interested in sharing my experience at the last iPad Camp (students 7 to 11 years old) in July, 2017 at the Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg. I have done a number of animation workshops with the focus on works of art for inspiration. This time my interest was getting kids to animate science. I showed the students shorts from Anim8Nature and they created their own animated life cycles and demonstrated how various animals move. The results were wonderful and the student response to their work was very gratifying. I look forward to sharing their work at the VSTE meeting in December.

Here are samples of the Anim8Nature life cycles
